ACTIVITIES OVER THE INDONESIAN FORENSIC MEDICINE

Indonesia is a big country with more than 3000 islands, with more than 220 million populations and has many culture and ethnics as well as local languages. Also its multi religion even though the majority of Indonesian are Moslem.

Its geographic has a strategic meaning for many countries, because it lies between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, and two continents Asia and Australia.

Indonesia also lies in the very active and two long volcano chains and between the Asia and pacific plates, so it has an active movement of the plates as well as the active volcanoes.

With all of these, Indonesia is very delicate for disasters either natural or man made disasters, such as volcano eruption, Tsunami, horizontal conflicts or even terrorism, especially if the situation an political situation could not become stable. In other term we could call Indonesia is like a giant supermarket or Hypermarket of disaster because every disaster could happen in Indonesia.

With all the latest situation since the beginning of the 21st century the Forensic medicine in Indonesia has becoming more and more advance together with the Disaster Victim Identification we had been trying to always using and committed to use the Interpol DVI standard procedure and right now we have a modern Forensic DNA laboratory with the latest sophisticated equipments and we are beginning to build a National DNA Database centre including the Criminal Database with all the recourses we have.

As on February 5 – 6, 2007 with the cooperation between the Indonesian national Police and the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology we conducted an International Symposium on ForensicDNA  at the Borobudur International Hotel. It was being officially opened by the Minister of Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia.

We usually submitted a presentation report of our activities in forensic and DVI matters.      From June 13 until July 7, 2007 as the result of the operation to the new Forensic DNA Laboratory, 5 personnel were being trained in Australia to become the experts for operating the Forensic DNA Laboratory
